Your roof works hard every day, especially with the wind and rain we get across Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. Keeping it safe is not about climbing up there yourself. It is about a few simple habits, spotting problems early, and knowing when to call a roofer. Here is how to look after your roof, and yourself, all year round.
Keep your feet on the ground
The first rule of roof safety is that you should not go up on the roof. Wet slates and tiles are slippery, flat roofs can be weaker than they look, and a fall from a ladder can cause serious injury. Most checks can be done from the ground, from an upstairs window, or from inside your loft. Leave anything that needs you to climb to a roofer who works at height every day and has the right access equipment, such as scaffolding where the job needs it.
Look up after bad weather
After a storm or a spell of strong wind, take a few minutes to look at your roof from the garden or the street. Things to look out for include:
- slipped, cracked or missing tiles and slates
- ridge tiles that look loose or out of line
- lead flashing that has lifted around a chimney or wall
- debris sitting on a flat roof or in the gutters
If you spot any of these, it is worth getting them checked before the next downpour. Small gaps let water in, and water damage inside the house usually costs far more to put right than the roof repair itself.

Keep gutters and downpipes clear
Blocked gutters are one of the most common reasons water ends up where it should not. Leaves and moss build up, water overflows, and it can run down walls or back under the roof edge. If you can reach your gutters safely from the ground with the right tools, keep them clear. If not, ask for help rather than leaning off a ladder.
Keep an eye on flat roofs
Flat roofs on extensions, garages, dormers and bungalows need a little extra care. Watch for water that sits in puddles long after the rain has stopped, splits or blisters in the surface, and edge trims that have come loose. Catching these early can mean a simple flat roof repair instead of a full replacement.

Get problems fixed properly
A quick patch can sometimes hide a problem rather than solve it. When we carry out a roof repair, we look for where the water is really getting in, so the repair lasts.
